Homework

At Sawtry Junior Academy we believe that homework, in the way we set it, helps to develop children’s independent learning skills and effectively build on children’s understanding of the work they have covered that week in class. Challenges are open ended and accessible by all children.

This year, homework will focus on reading, with all children having a class text. This could be linked to the topic either fiction or non-fiction or be a high-quality text by a well known children’s author. Work will be set to ensure comprehension and involve children responding to their reading. They will also have a maths task each week to reinforce key learning covered that week. A spelling sheet has been introduced which aims to support children in learning their spellings and spelling rules.

We encourage parents to support their children with homework. In addition to their weekly homework tasks, all children are expected to read daily and learn their times tables and spellings. All children have learning logs which they record their reading in and also have a wide range of support information for maths and literacy to help children, and parents with their homework. All children also have a Times tables rockstars account and we expect them to log on at least weekly to practise their times tables and undertake challenges to improve fluency and recall.

Class teachers make parents and children aware of the expectations and day to hand homework in at the start of the year and discuss this at parent consultations during the year. We would like to thank parents for their continued support in helping children to complete their homework as it does have a marked impact on the progress of their children.

Homework club runs every Friday lunchtime and enables puils to access teacher support, should they need it and a quiet, supportive environment in which to work. Pupils do not need to sign up, they simply arrive at 12pm, collect a lunch queue pass, then return after they have eaten to the club.
