Learning Outside of the Classroom

At Sawtry Junior Academy we provide regular opportunities for children to learn outside of the classroom in all subject areas. We are fortunate to have extensive grounds which we make good use of including trim trails, climbing equipment, a large field, sensory garden, large playground with sports court and other educational and exploratory markings, outdoor classroom and a wildlife area.

We are also fortunate to have a separate creative arts space where the children can access art, design technology, food technology (cooking) and music.

We make good use of enrichment opportunities through our eco-council, nature club and other clubs.

The children benefit from a well-planned trips and visits programme linked to their curriculum, led by our educational visits co-ordinator. This includes opportunities to visit museums, outward-bound centres and theatres. We also have a programme of inviting in guests who can provide enrichment to our curriculum such as being part of the magistrates in the community programme and live theatre groups. We work closely with the local secondary school and the children experience opportunities to enjoy sport and theatre and other facilities they have.

We also provide opportunities for the children to develop their values. We work closely with a local litter picking organisation and all children have an opportunity to learn how to make sandwiches which are then distributed on a regular basis to a homeless charity.
